Overall, 43% of college graduates are underemployed in their first job. When examined by major, underemployment rates vary by 50 percentage points, from 29% in engineering to 80% in personal and culinary services, a more than twofold difference in risk. This list shows the spot unemployment rate for each major, obtained from the 27,395 alumni who have taken our survey. The number of surveys, years, major, motivation levels and tenacity all play a role in employment rates, and overall employability. Over half (54%) of psychology majors have a first job that does not require a college degree, and over two-thirds of those remain underemployed after five years. First-job underemployment rates are similarly high for biology and biomedicine majors (51%) and education majors (50%). Underemployment has a more adverse effect on those with college or post-graduate degrees. A 2012 Gallup poll asked the underemployed, which included unemployed respondents in the survey, to rate whether they felt they were thriving or not. Just a little more than half of the underemployed said they were, compared to roughly 70% of their employed colleagues. College majors that are hampered by high unemployment rates include a variety of psychology degrees, fine arts and architecture.
