There has been much talk surrounding whether or not Tesla can keep up its newly achieved Model 3 production rate. Many people have argued that Tesla went to great lengths to hit its production goal of 5,000 Model 3 vehicles per week by the end of June. This makes perfect sense since the automaker built a tent, Thus far, Tesla has only produced higher-cost versions of the Model 3, starting at about $49,000. But Musk said many of the trade-ins it received were mass-market vehicles, including the Toyota Prius and Honda Accords and Civics. Morgan Stanley, for example, issued a note last July stating that while Gigafactory 3 will likely get activated in 2019, the facility will only produce 35,000 to 40,000 Model 3 per year in 2020. Tesla thinks it is still on track for 500,000 cars a year by 2020, and that it might even go beyond that. 500,000 is based on Fremont factory production capacity, but Tesla may localize production in some places in 3–5 years. Tesla now wants to maintain that rate and begin reducing the costs of making the Model 3, so the company can profitably produce the car at the originally planned and long-awaited price of $35,000
